Brian Tyree Henry replaced Ice Cube
The story of Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, a boxer from Flint, Michigan, who trained to become the first woman in the history of her country to win an Olympic gold medal in this discipline. In the film, Claressa’s father is released from prison when she is sixteen and trains for the Olympics. In real life, Bo Shields was released from prison when she was nine and it was after his release that she got interested in boxing.
And yet, runners, gymnasts and swimmers do it with ease
T-Rex version (2015). Honestly, I am ashamed that I have never heard of Claressa Shields. How is it possible that she won two in a row and did not become famous?
Maybe I just don’t know much about sports
This just proves that women still have a long way to go, because if it was a man, I am sure it would be different. On the other hand, I cannot name a single successful Olympic boxer. Whatever it is, this movie pointed out a real problem that exists.
It was sad and shameful
As far as sports movies go, this one is interesting because it’s not a build-up to her winning gold, instead it’s just the halfway point. It’s more about Claressa’s struggles after becoming world champion. I really enjoyed this movie, it’s worth your time and it’s beautifully done.
This was AMC Screen Unseen on December 16th
The acting by Ryan Destiny and Brian Henry is phenomenal! A wonderful surprise for my first screen unseen.
