A couple’s lives are turned upside down when their daughter is cast alongside a controversial big star. Quoted in The DA’S Office: Ep. 26 – THE ACOLYTE DISASTER! Could This Be The End For DISNEY STAR WARS? (2024). The first half of the film is more of a character study about a deeply unhappy and lonely housewife, Anette, who soon finds out that her husband Ben may be having an affair with famous actress Alicia. The second half of the film is more of a thriller as the pace picks up and the cogs in Anette’s head start to turn. The film is a true slow burn: chilly and frosty at first, then warm and simmering, then explosive in the final act. It is gripping, engaging and suspenseful throughout. Carried by a fantastic performance by Daisy Ridley. She is a true revelation. Her quiet moments of simmering rage are heartbreaking. There is a symbolic scene where we see her break a mirror after pressing herself against it for a few moments, symbolizing her crumbling marriage. Shazad Latif is good here too. The film has some mediocre aspects. The trailer is quite misleading. It can drag on and get a bit boring at times. The ending may be cathartic and rewarding for some viewers, while it may be mediocre for other viewers. Hiba Ahmed as Matilda, the daughter, is just okay, although child performances in films are often not very good. She seemed more like a prop than a character. And Matilda Lutz, while really beautiful and charming in the context of the film and convincing as a movie star, was just okay. Perhaps it is because Lutz is Italian that many of her lines sounded odd or stilted. If you like thrillers with strong acting, especially those dealing with female rage, eroticism and infidelity, this film is for you.
